Über das Museum

Founded in 1859, the Freies Deutsches Hochstift is one of the oldest research institutions in the fields of literature and cultural studies. Today, it is a combination of a research institute, museum, Goethe-memorial and event venue.
The ideational center is the family home of Goethe at the Großer Hirschgraben in Frankfurt am Main. Furthermore, the Goethe-Museum, a gallery of paintings of the time of Goethe - featuring works of famous painters like C.D. Friedrich, Füssli, Tischbein und Hackert -, an archive of handwritten scripts, a graphics collection, and a library belong to the Freies Deutsches Hochstift. The research activities of the institution are also reflected in two historical and critical editions.
