Description

Unter einer Trauerweide sitzt Lotte nach links gewandt in weitem Kleid à l’anglaise und mit federgeschmückten Hut, auf den Knien der aufgeschlagene Kloppstock. Links dahinter Werthers Grab hinter hohem Gitter, von einer Urne bekrönt, auf dem Sockel ein Engelskopf, Palmzweige und ein Stundenglas.

Inscription

Bezeichnet: In der Platte links neben der Darstellung "B. Reading pinxit", rechts neben der Darstellung "B. Reading fecit". Unten mittig "CHARLOTTE at the Tomb of WERTER / At Werter’s Tomb beneath a Willow plac’d. / Fair Charlotte sits in Contemplation chaste. / What to defend thy Life, O Youth She lent. / Thy misplac’d Passion shows by dire Event." Darunter "London Pub d. 1 st. Septem r. 1785 by R. Wilkinson N°. 58 Cornhill". Verso beschriftet in Bleistift: "Geoffroy, Paris".
