Bei der Entstehung des Zechsteinmeeres vor 258 Mio. Jahren besiedelten Muscheln schon längst den Boden der Weltmeere. Ihre ersten Vertreter dieser zweischaligen Tiere sind als Fossilien bereits im Kambrium (500 Mio. Jahre) nachweisbar. Die Familie Trigonioidea, zu der die Schizodeen gehören, erschien ca. 75 Mio. Jahre später im Silur.
